Why the expiry date on your passport isn't the real deadline
Dozens of countries enforce a six-month validity rule: your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. Many others require three months. That means a passport expiring in May can stop you boarding a flight in December.
Airlines check this at the gate, and they refuse boarding rather than risk a fine. Travel insurance rarely covers a trip lost this way, because being denied boarding for an invalid document is treated as the traveller's responsibility.
How far ahead should you renew?
Routine renewal takes anywhere from three to twelve weeks depending on the country and time of year, and peak season backlogs regularly push that further. Expedited services exist but cost significantly more and still take days.
A safe rule is to start the renewal nine months before the printed expiry date. That gives you a comfortable buffer against processing delays and keeps you clear of the six-month rule for any trip you might book in the meantime.
Setting up your tracker
