Turkey (Türkiye) sits at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East and combines a large domestic economy with one of the most active investment-migration markets in the world. Short-stay travel runs on the e-Visa system (evisa.gov.tr) for over 100 nationalities, long-stay life is anchored by a tiered Residence Permit system (Short-Term, Family, Student, Long-Term), and skilled talent can access the Turquoise Card — Turkey's flagship long-term residence and work permit for highly qualified professionals, investors and researchers. The Citizenship by Investment programme (property USD 400,000+ or fixed-deposit USD 500,000) remains among the fastest globally, typically closing in 3–6 months.
How the immigration system works
The Presidency of Migration Management (PMM / Göç İdaresi) under the Ministry of Interior handles residence permits, asylum and long-term status. Work permits are issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (ÇSGB) via the e-İzin portal. Citizenship — including CBI — is decided by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs (Nüfus). The Turquoise Card is administered jointly by the Ministry of Labour and PMM. Short-stay entry runs through the e-Visa system operated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Key risks & challenges
Currency risk: the CBRT lock-in is USD-denominated but property is transacted in TRY — plan the FX conversion carefully
It depends on your nationality. Over 70 countries — including most EU states, Japan, South Korea and GCC citizens — enter Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Another 100+ nationalities (US, UK, India, China, Australia, Canada) use the online e-Visa on evisa.gov.tr. A small list of restricted nationalities must apply at a Turkish consulate. Always check evisa.gov.tr before travel.
Is Turkish citizenship by investment really as fast as it sounds?
Yes — in practice 3–6 months from investment closing to passport issuance is typical when the file is clean. The main bottlenecks are the SPK-licensed valuation for property files, obtaining the Certificate of Conformity from the relevant ministry, and Nüfus processing. Currency risk (USD lock-in vs. TRY purchase) is the single biggest variable to manage.
Does time on a Student Residence Permit count toward Long-Term Residence?
No. Turkish immigration law explicitly excludes years spent on a Student Residence Permit from the 8-year continuous residence requirement for Long-Term Residence. Students who convert to a Work Permit after graduating start accumulating qualifying years from the date of the new permit.
Can I work in Turkey on a Short-Term Residence Permit?
No. Short-Term Residence Permits do not confer the right to work in the Turkish labour market. You need a Work Permit (issued by the Ministry of Labour), a Turquoise Card, or a Work Permit Exemption for the specific activity. Remote work for a foreign employer is tolerated on a Short-Term Residence Permit as long as no local income is generated.
How does Turkey's Digital Nomad Visa compare to Portugal's D8 or Spain's DNV?
Turkey's DNV is cheaper (income threshold ~USD 36k/year vs. €41k for Portugal's D8) and tax-efficient because Turkey does not tax foreign-source income of most short-term residents. On the flip side, Turkey is not a Schengen state, so DNV holders cannot circulate freely in Europe like Portuguese or Spanish nomad-visa holders.
Is dual citizenship allowed for Turkish nationals?
Yes. Turkey has permitted dual citizenship since 1981 and does not require CBI applicants to renounce their original nationality. However, applicants should always verify whether their country of origin permits dual citizenship before proceeding.
Do I need to speak Turkish for any of these permits?
No, none of the residence permits or the Turquoise Card require Turkish language proficiency. Naturalisation via the ordinary 5-year residence route requires sufficient Turkish to communicate; the CBI route does not test language ability.
