Why Spain?

Spain's 2023 Startup Law transformed the country into one of Europe's most accessible destinations for remote workers, founders and high-net-worth retirees. Combined with the 47 million population, the public healthcare system and the 5-year path to PR / 10-year path to citizenship (2 for Ibero-American nationals), Spain now hosts over 6 million foreign residents — more than 12% of the population.

How the immigration system works

Spain has a parallel system: regular work and family permits processed by the Oficina de Extranjería at the provincial level, and the 'fast-track' Large Companies & Strategic Sectors Unit (UGE) under the Startup Law for digital nomads, highly qualified professionals, entrepreneurs, investors and intra-company transferees — typically resolved in 20 working days. Schengen short stays are visa-free or via the standard Type C visa.

Who Spain is best for

  • Remote workers earning ≥ €2,762/month from non-Spanish clients
  • Highly qualified professionals on Spanish payroll
  • Non-lucrative retirees with €28,800+/year passive income
  • Founders endorsed by ENISA as 'innovative entrepreneurs'
  • Ibero-American nationals (fast-track to citizenship in 2 years)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Spain

Can I work for a Spanish client on the Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes, but Spanish-source income must stay below 20% of total earnings. Exceeding it can invalidate the residence.

What is the Beckham Law?

Special tax regime allowing qualifying new residents to pay a flat 24% on Spanish-source income up to €600,000 for 6 years. Digital nomads, highly qualified professionals and certain founders may opt in.

How quickly can Ibero-American nationals get citizenship?

After just 2 years of legal residence — applies to nationals of all Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, Brazil, Portugal, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Sephardic Jews.

Is the Golden Visa still available?

No. Spain abolished the Golden Visa real-estate route on 3 April 2025. Existing holders keep their status.

Can I include my partner without marriage?

Yes — registered domestic partnerships (pareja de hecho) and de-facto unions with 1+ year cohabitation evidence are accepted by most consulates.

What's the NIE?

Número de Identificación de Extranjero — the foreigner ID number assigned to every applicant. Required for banking, contracts and tax. The TIE is the physical residence card.

Does Spain allow dual citizenship?

Only with Ibero-American countries, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines and Portugal. Other nationalities must formally renounce — though enforcement is light.

How does the autonomos (self-employed) tax work?

Reduced quotas in year 1 (€87/month bonus), rising progressively. Digital nomads may instead use the Beckham regime if eligible.
