Why Italy?

Italy issues residence permits to ~250,000 non-EU nationals per year, split between the quota-driven Decreto Flussi (general workers), the Digital Nomad Visa launched in April 2024, the Elective Residence visa for passive-income retirees, and the EU Blue Card. Italy is also globally unique for jure sanguinis citizenship — passed down with no generational limit from an Italian ancestor.

How the immigration system works

The Ministry of the Interior, the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione (SUI) at each Prefettura, and the Questura process applications, with consulates handling overseas visas. Work routes are quota-restricted: each spring, the Decreto Flussi opens 'click days' for seasonal, non-seasonal and self-employed slots. Outside quotas, EU Blue Card, Digital Nomad, Investor and Elective Residence visas are quota-free.

Who Italy is best for

  • Remote workers earning ≥ €28,000/year (3× minimum healthcare threshold)
  • Highly qualified workers under the EU Blue Card
  • Retirees with €31,000+/year passive income (Elective Residence)
  • Investors via the Investor Visa (€250k start-up / €500k SRL / €2M bonds)
  • Descendants of Italian citizens (jure sanguinis)

Italy's tax code — required for almost every administrative step. Obtainable at consulates or local Agenzia delle Entrate offices once in Italy.

Can I bring my family on the Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes — spouse and minor children can apply for family cohesion permits, with full work rights for the spouse after registration.

How long until citizenship by residence?

10 years of legal residence for non-EU nationals (3 for EU, 4 for nationals of countries with reciprocity).

Italian women could not pass citizenship to children born before 1 January 1948. Descendants in this situation must apply via Italian court (not consulate) — usually completing in 12–24 months.

Does Italy allow dual citizenship?

Yes — Italy permits multiple nationalities with no restriction.

Can I buy a house on a tourist visa?

Yes — there's no residence requirement to purchase property, but ownership doesn't grant residence rights.

What is the Investor Visa?
