Why France?

France issues residence permits to over 320,000 non-EU nationals per year, with the Passeport Talent now spanning 11 categories from researchers to investors and the Talent–Salarié Qualifié route covering skilled employees. Permanent residence (Carte de Résident) is available after 5 years, and naturalisation typically after 5 years (2 with a French degree) with B1 French.

How the immigration system works

Long-stay matters are run by the Office Français de l'Immigration et de l'Intégration (OFII) with prefectures issuing the residence card (titre de séjour). Most workers enter via the multi-year Passeport Talent (Talent), the standard salaried-worker permit, the student VLS-TS, or the Profession Libérale route for freelancers. EU nationals are exempt from visas entirely.

Who France is best for

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about France

What's the difference between Passeport Talent and a standard work visa?

Passeport Talent is multi-year (up to 4 years), open to family from day one with full work rights, and is reserved for highly qualified or strategic profiles. The standard 'Salarié' permit is 1 year and tied to your employer.

Can I switch from student VLS-TS to a work permit?

Yes — graduates of a French master's-level program get an automatic 12-month Recherche d'Emploi card (APS) and may switch directly to Passeport Talent or Salarié on offer.

How fast is the path to citizenship?

5 years of residence with B1 French, or 2 years if you hold a French master's degree. Spouses of French citizens may apply after 4 years of marriage.

Is private health insurance mandatory?

Yes for the visa application, but Talent / employee permit holders join the public Assurance Maladie (PUMa) after 3 months of residence.

Do I need to speak French?

Not for the visa itself. B1 is required for citizenship and A2 for the 10-year Résident card.

Does France allow dual citizenship?

Yes — France has no restriction on holding multiple nationalities.

What is OFII validation?

Within 3 months of arrival, VLS-TS holders must validate the visa online (~€200 stamp), which converts the visa into a 1-year residence permit equivalent.

Can I work full-time as a student?

Up to 60% of the legal working time (~964 hours/year). Doctoral students have no cap.
