Why United Arab Emirates?

The UAE has rebuilt its residency framework around long-term retention rather than short employer-tied permits. The 10-year Golden Visa and 5-year Green Visa now cover investors, skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, top students, healthcare and education workers, and freelancers. Standard 2-year employment residency is still the dominant route for salaried expats, backed by employer sponsorship and Emirates ID issuance within days of arrival.

How the immigration system works

Federal residency policy is set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), with Dubai administered separately by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). Free zones (DMCC, DIFC, ADGM, IFZA, etc.) issue their own sponsorship visas independently of onshore employers. There is no personal income tax; corporate tax of 9% applies above AED 375,000 profit.

Who United Arab Emirates is best for

  • Skilled professionals with a UAE job offer (finance, tech, healthcare, engineering)
  • Investors and property owners meeting AED 2M+ thresholds (Golden Visa)
  • Founders and freelancers using free-zone licences
  • High-earning specialists (AED 30,000+/month) eligible for the Green Visa
  • Family members of residents, and remote workers on the 1-year virtual work permit

Indian software engineer relocating to Dubai on a tech salary

Dubai Internet City and DIFC firms recruit mid-level engineers at AED 20,000–35,000/month. Standard 2-year employment visa first; upgrade to Green Visa once salary passes AED 15,000 and degree is attested.

Employment Visa → Green Visa

British entrepreneur applying for the UAE Golden Visa

Founding a mainland or free-zone company plus AED 2M+ in shareholder capital (or an accredited AED 2M investment) unlocks the 10-year Golden Visa — no employer sponsor, full family cover.

Investor Visa → Golden Visa

Egyptian accountant securing a UAE work permit

Big-four and local firms sponsor accountants at AED 12,000–20,000/month. Degree attestation via MOFA Cairo is the critical prerequisite; without it MOHRE will not issue the permit.

Employment Visa (2-year)

Remote worker moving from London to Dubai for 12 months

Existing UK salary of USD 5,000+/month qualifies for the Virtual Work Residency — you sponsor yourself, get an Emirates ID, and keep your foreign employment relationship.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about United Arab Emirates

Can I immigrate permanently to the UAE?

Traditional citizenship is rarely granted, but the 10-year Golden Visa provides indefinitely renewable residency with the ability to sponsor family and own real estate, which functions like PR in practice.

What is the UAE Golden Visa?

A 10-year, self-sponsored residency for investors, entrepreneurs, high-salaried professionals, top students, and outstanding talents in science, culture and sport. It removes the need for an employer sponsor and allows sponsoring family for the same 10-year period.

How much does a UAE work visa cost?

Government fees for a standard 2-year employment visa fall in the AED 3,000–7,000 range and are typically paid by the employer. Golden and Green Visas cost AED 2,300–4,000 in government fees, plus category evidence such as property or investment.

Do I pay income tax in the UAE?

No personal income tax on salary or investment income. A 9% corporate tax applies to business profits above AED 375,000.

Can I bring my family?

Yes. Residents meeting the salary threshold (usually AED 4,000+/month) can sponsor spouse, minor children, and — with justification — parents. Golden Visa holders can sponsor family for the full 10 years.

What happens if I lose my job?

You have a grace period (typically 60–180 days depending on visa category and year of issue) to find new sponsorship or exit the country. Golden and Green Visa holders are not affected by employer changes.

Can I work in Dubai on a tourist visa?

No. Working without a valid work permit carries fines, deportation and re-entry bans. The Virtual Work Residency is the legal route to work remotely from the UAE.

How fast can I get an Emirates ID?

Typically 5–10 working days after biometrics. Fast-track service is available at ICP centres for same-day issuance.
