H-1B Visa: complete guide + corridor pages
Lottery mechanics, sponsorship, costs and green-card pathways — plus dedicated guides for the 10 largest H-1B applicant nationalities.
H-1B for Indian citizens
India is not just the largest H-1B market — it is the most pattern-driven. Your file is read against decades of decisions on similar profiles, and the biggest risk factors are structural (three-year degrees, third-party placements) rather than personal.
H-1B for Nigerian citizens
For Nigerian citizens, the H-1B petition is often easier than the consular interview. Success turns on employer credibility, document preparation, and interviewing on the job — not on family or plans in the U.S.
H-1B for Pakistani citizens
For Pakistani applicants, the H-1B is technically approvable but temporally unpredictable. Plan for the consular clearance step, not the petition, as the critical path.
H-1B for Bangladeshi citizens
Bangladesh sits between the high-scrutiny consular posts of the region and current green-card categories. For most Bangladeshi applicants, once the H-1B approval lands, the pathway to permanent residence is measured in single-digit years, not decades.
H-1B for Canadian citizens
Canadians are the only major H-1B nationality that never sees a consular interview. The H-1B is chosen not for speed or ease, but for immigrant-intent optionality that TN cannot provide.
H-1B for Brazilian citizens
Brazil combines a strong engineering education system with current green-card categories. For most Brazilian H-1B holders, permanent residence is a 2–4 year horizon — not a decade.
H-1B for Filipino citizens
For Filipino applicants, occupation selection matters more than country strategy. Healthcare workers should almost always weigh EB-3 direct against H-1B; IT and finance professionals should treat H-1B as the primary path with a fast green-card follow-on.
H-1B for Egyptian citizens
For Egyptian applicants, the H-1B is technically approvable but consular timing is the wild card. Employers with Egyptian H-1B experience and applicants with pre-prepared SAO documentation see the fastest paths.
H-1B for Ghanaian citizens
For Ghanaian applicants, employer selection matters more than country strategy. Employers with prior African-hire H-1Bs process the case faster and interview candidates more effectively.
H-1B for British citizens
For British applicants, the H-1B is rarely the bottleneck — the choice between H-1B and O-1 usually is. Candidates with strong research or industry recognition should evaluate O-1 in parallel before committing to a lottery-dependent pathway.

U.S. Green Card: complete guide + corridor pages
Every pathway to U.S. permanent residence — EB-1 to EB-5, family, marriage, DV lottery, asylum — plus dedicated corridor pages for the 10 largest applicant nationalities.
Green Card for Indian citizens
India is the single largest source of new Green Card applications each year, and also the country with the longest employment-based backlog in the entire system. Fastest realistic routes for most Indian applicants are EB-1, EB-2 NIW, family-based via a U.S.-citizen relative, or EB-5 under the rural set-aside — each of which sidesteps the EB-2 and EB-3 backlog that keeps most Indian applicants waiting a decade or more.
Green Card for Chinese citizens
China faces the second-longest employment-based Green Card backlog after India. EB-1 and EB-2 for China currently sit years behind current, though EB-5 under the rural set-aside remains an accelerator. Consular scrutiny of source-of-funds and industry backgrounds (especially in dual-use technologies) increased in 2024–2025.
Green Card for Nigerian citizens
Nigeria is DV-eligible in most years and one of the largest African sources of employment-based Green Card filings. EB-2, EB-3 and family categories for Nigeria remain relatively current on the Visa Bulletin — the primary friction is consular scrutiny at Lagos rather than backlog. DV-2027 has excluded Nigeria in some prior years; verify each fiscal year's list.
Green Card for Pakistani citizens
Pakistan is DV-eligible in most years. Employment-based Green Card categories for Pakistan are largely current — the friction is Islamabad consular processing rather than backlog. Family-based filings from U.S.-citizen Pakistani-American relatives dominate the corridor.
Green Card for Filipino citizens
The Philippines faces the deepest family-preference Green Card backlog in the world — F3 and F4 for Filipino applicants regularly exceed 22 years. Employment-based routes, EB-2 NIW, and immediate-relative cases through U.S.-citizen relatives are the realistic accelerators. The Philippines is excluded from the DV lottery.
Green Card for Bangladeshi citizens
Bangladesh is a large DV lottery source and one of the fastest-growing employment-based Green Card corridors from South Asia. Employment categories for Bangladesh are current or near-current, making EB-2 and EB-3 realistic 2–3 year routes. Family-based sibling and adult-child categories face 8–12 year waits.
Green Card for Brazilian citizens
Brazilian nationals face virtually no employment-based Green Card backlog — EB-1, EB-2, EB-3 and EB-5 for Brazil are current. The primary friction is consular processing wait times in São Paulo, Rio, and Brasília rather than Visa Bulletin backlogs. Brazil is excluded from the DV lottery in recent years.
Green Card for Mexican citizens
Mexico faces the deepest family-preference Green Card backlog outside the Philippines — F3 and F4 for Mexican applicants regularly exceed 22 years. Employment-based, EB-2 NIW, and immediate-relative cases through U.S.-citizen relatives are the realistic accelerators. Mexico is excluded from the DV lottery.
Green Card for British citizens
British nationals face virtually no Green Card backlog in any category. Employment-based, family-based, and EB-5 categories for the UK are current. Consular processing at London is efficient and predictable. The UK (except Northern Ireland) is excluded from the DV lottery.
Green Card for Canadian citizens
Canadians face virtually no Green Card backlog and enjoy the smoothest consular processing of any nationality — TN visa holders often transition to EB-2 or EB-3 with minimal friction. All employment-based and family-based categories are current. Canada is excluded from the DV lottery.
